26 New ASU Freshman Seminar Students work together to impact the environment. A late afternoon start only encouraged these students make their mark before dark. Three separate groups worked simulaneously: The first
group took a recycled door and frame, sanded them, and then put on a coat of metal primer.
We have used recyled materials whenever possible. This metal door and frame
are a fire rated, high quality assembly that was thrown in the trash. The second group dug a trench for a drain line in the model eco home. This drain will connect to a traditional septic system, while a grey water system will take usable water out to the garden area for irrigation. Thousands of gallons of clothes and dish washing water can be reused.
The third
group backfilled a cinder block retaining wall and prepared the pipes for our rain
collectors. Water from the roof of the storage building will be collected through
these pipes and used for irrigation. This retaining wall will become the back wall
of the greenhouse next year.
After completing the work, the whole group gathered for a review of the days activities.
And, let us not forget the food....and our cook Jenny Trimble!
