1/20/03 MLK Challenge Day

MLK Challenge Team Helps Put a Roof Up

What a great surprise.  In the middle of January the sun came out and the temperature jumped up into the 40s.  It was a perfect day
for our MLK Challenge.

The big surprise, however, was that everything we planned to do that day changed.  Our challenge was to
dig out our root cellar in the basement of the model Eco-Home.

Instead, literally minutes before our team arrived, a delivery truck showed up with our roof trusses for the house.
Our challenge instantaneously changed:  we unloaded the truck, and carried a ton of trusses down to the work site.

We had to think through our challenge and engineer a way to move the trusses, nearly 60' in length,
down the hill and up on the roof of the house.

By the end of the day we had fastened down the internal scaffolding, set up scaffolding in front
of the house, carried down all of the small trusses, and then carried, lifted,
and slid into position the two heaviest girder trusses.

With these two girders in place, we can now begin the installation of the roof, starting at the two outside ends.

  Working together to make a
difference in this world!
