In looking for a roofing solution, our primary interest was to
find a solution that was long term with the least amount of enviromental impact.
This led us to look at metal as an answer. In our part of the country we have many
old farmhouses that are over 100 years old that have roofs that are still intact and
working. In exploring further, we made a wonderful discovery: an aluminum shingle
that was made of 98% recycled metal. Once we went into it further we were
overwhelmed by what we discovered. Here are some of the facts that influenced our
decision:
1. The shingle was stamped and looked like a cedar shake shingle.
2. Shingles interlock and can withstand 180 mile per hour wind.
Important in the mountains.
3. The finish on the shingle was guaranteed for the life of the
home. Life expectancy of this product exceeds 150 years.
4. Aluminum shingles reflect 95% of the sun's radiant energy.
This will result in an attic temperature that is 30 to 35 degrees lower than
traditional roofs.
5. These shingles, if damaged or discarded, can be placed in a
recycle bin with Coke cans. Use of this type of shingle will reduce landfill dumping
of asphalt shingles to the tune of 80 billion tons a year in the United States alone.
6. Unlike metal roofing, this product will not corrode.
This is probably more important in seashore areas, but we thought it would be an asset
anyway.
